A POLICE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM WHICH UTILIZES LOW-COST TELEPHONE 'TOUCH-TONE' SIGNALING TO REDUCE AUDIO RADIO TRANSMISSIONS IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED.
Abstract
REASONS FOR THE INCREASING VOLUME OF POLICE AUDIO RADIO TRANSMISSIONS ARE LISTED, AND THE COMMON PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THIS RADIO CONGESTION ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHOR NOTES THAT AUTOMATION OF CERTAIN PORTIONS OF A STANDARD POLICE TRANSMISSION, SUCH AS THE DISPATCHER INQUIRY OF AVAILABILITY OR THE MOBILE UNIT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE MESSAGE WOULD CONSIDERABLY REDUCE THIS CONGESTION. A 'TOUCH-TONE' UNIT, INSTALLED IN EACH POLICE CAR, COULD BE USED TO AUTOMATE THESE FUNCTIONS. WHILE THIS SYSTEM MAY BE USED WITH ANY STANDARD TWO-WAY RADIO, IT IS ALSO COMPATIBLE FOR COMPUTER INPUT AND MAY BE USED AS A PRELIMINARY PHASE IN CONVERSION TO A TOTAL COMPUTER AIDED DISPATCH SYSTEM.
