REVIEW OF THE DATA OF OTHER STUDIES INDICATING THAT THERE EXISTS A SMALL BUT REAL NEGATIVE ASSOCIATION, THAT THIS HAS STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE, AND THAT IT CAN BE ACCEPTED AS AN ESTABLISHED ASSOCIATION OF SOME GENERALITY.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR IS CONCERNED THAT SOME CRIMINOLOGISTS' CURRENT INTERESTS AND ATTEMPTS AT THEORY-CONSTRUCTION MAY ORIGINATE FROM AND BE BASED UPON THE ERRONEOUS BELIEF (WHICH THEY BELIEVE TO BE FACTUALLY ESTABLISHED) THAT CLASS AND SELF-REPORTED DELINQUENCY ARE UNCORRELATED AND SECONDLY THAT THIS ILLUSION DERIVES FROM THE MISAPPLICATION OF STATISTICAL METHOD.
