DESCRIPTION OF THE HERSTEDVESTER SOCIAL-THERAPEUTIC INSTITUTION IN WEST GERMANY, ITS SIZE, STRUCTURE, SECURITY MEASURES, AND THE CARE AND TREATMENT PROVIDED FOR ITS INMATES.
Abstract
THE PRINCIPAL TASK OF A SOCIAL-THERAPEUTIC INSTITUTION IS TO LIMIT THE DANGER OF SERIOUS OFFENSES BY ITS INMATES IN THE FUTURE. THIS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED IN THREE WAYS. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INMATE'S PERSONALITY IS ENCOURAGED. THE DISADVANTAGES CONNECTED WITH LIFE IN AN INSTITUTION ARE REDUCED, PRIMARILY BY EMPHASIZING THE POSITIVE FACTORS IN THE INDIVIDUAL, EVEN THOUGH THIS MUST BE DONE BY ASSUMING AN ATTITUDE OF NAIVE OPTIMISM. AN EFFORT IS MADE TO GET THE INMATE TO ASSUME A LESS EXPOSED, SO-CALLED MARGINAL POSITION AFTER HIS RELEASE FROM THE INSTITUTION. --IN GERMAN
