RESULTS OF A STUDY EXPLORING THE NOTION THAT PERSONALITY FACTORS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH PUNITIVENESS AND THAT CONSERVATISM CONCERNING TREATMENT OF CRIMINAL OFFENDERS IS RELATED TO CONSERVATISM IN OTHER ATTITUDE AREAS.
Abstract
GENERAL CONSERVATISM WAS FOUND TO BE MOST STRONGLY RELATED TO PUNISHMENT-SEVERITY FOR PROPERTY OFFENSES AND TWO OFFENSES AGAINST THE PERSON. THE MEAN PUNISHMENTS PRESCRIBED FOR EACH OF THE 15 OFFENSES MEASURED WERE LARGELY THE SAME AS THOSE CURRENTLY IMPOSED BY NEW ZEALAND COURTS. THE GREATEST SPREAD OCCURRED WITH REGARD TO MARIJUANA OFFENSES.
