DESCRIPTION OF THE PROVISIONS OF A PROPOSAL BASED, TO A LARGE EXTENT, ON SUGGESTIONS MADE BY THE FINES COMMISSION WHICH IS INTENDED TO CUT DOWN ON SHORT-TERM IMPRISONMENT SENTENCES, REPLACING THEM BY FINES WHERE POSSIBLE.
Abstract
ACCORDING TO THIS PROPOSAL, A JUDGE CAN SPECIFY THAT A FINE MAY BE PAID IN INSTALLMENTS. ALSO, FINES CAN BE COLLECTED DIRECTLY FROM THE OFFENDERS' BANK ACCOUNTS. LIMITS ARE ALSO PLACED ON DETENTION IMPOSED INSTEAD OF A FINE. THESE PROVISIONS AND RELATED MATTERS ARE DISCUSSED IN SOME DETAIL, PARTICULARLY IN REGARD TO FAILURE TO PAY OR SLOWNESS IN PAYING A FINE. --IN DUTCH
