THE PROS AND CONS OF THE INDETERMINATE SENTENCE ARE PRESENTED: THE INDETERMINATE SENTENCE, ALTHOUGH BASICALLY GOOD, ACCORDING TO THE AUTHOR, IS BLAMED FOR MANY OF THE FAILINGS OF THE COURTS, CORRECTIONS, AND THE CONVICTS.
Abstract
PLEA BARGAINING IS ONE OF THE CAUSES OF SYSTEMIC FAILURE. IF, FOR INSTANCE, AN OFFENDER PLEADS GUILTY TO A LESSER CHARGE, WHICH OF HIS PROBLEMS SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TREATMENT PROGRAMS? THE AUTHOR ALSO CONSIDERS THE CASE OF REPEAT OFFENDERS. SHOULD THE RECORDS OF FOUR OR FIVE TIME OFFENDERS BE CONSIDERED WHEN DESIGNING CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ONLY SENTENCED FOR THE LAST OFFENSE? THESE AND OTHER PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED.
