STUDY COMPARING THE NATIONAL VIEWS ON POLICE DEPARTMENTAL ORGANIZATION, PERSONNEL STANDARDS, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, TRAINING, AND INTRADEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATION WITH THOSE OF POLICE IN A MID-SIZED EASTERN COMMUNITY.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO ANALYZE THE NEEDS AND FUNCTIONS OF POLICE IN A CONTEMPORARY URBAN SOCIETY AFTER LOCAL EFFORTS TO UPGRADE SERVICES THROUGH MONETARY INCENTIVES HAD FAILED. A QUESTIONNAIRE WAS DEVELOPED AND INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED TO ASCERTAIN ATTITUDES OF THE POLICE IN COMMUNITY X TOWARD TRAINING AND EDUCATION, COMMUNITY RELATIONS, INTRADEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATION, POLICE IMAGE AND FUNCTIONS, AND JOB SATISFACTION. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE RESPONDENTS CONSIDER THEIR WORK MORE DEMANDING BECAUSE OF SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TENSIONS AS WELL AS GOVERNMENTAL PROBLEMS. CHANGES INVOLVING MODERATIONS IN ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, ATTITUDES, AND THE SCOPE OF POLICE DISCRETION ARE RECOMMENDED. THE QUESTIONNAIRE USED IN THE STUDY AND VARIOUS ANALYSES OF IT ARE CONTAINED IN APPENDIXES.
