Abstract
NINETY-ONE CASES OF THE SHOOTING OF POLICE WERE EXAMINED AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLASSIFIED INTO TWO GENERAL CATEGORIES: INCIDENTS INVOLVING SUSPECTS IN VEHICLES AND INCIDENTS INVOLVING SUSPECTS IN BUILDINGS. CASE ANALYSIS ISSUED IN THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS: IMPROVED TECHNIQUE FOR OCCUPANT CONTROL WHILE ISSUING TICKETS AND QUESTIONING, USE OF SPECIAL SAFETY EQUIPMENT WHEN APPROACHING BARRICADED SUSPECTS, TACTICAL DEPLOYMENT OF TWO OR MORE OFFICERS WITH APPROACH ROLE FOR EACH IN ALL CONTACTS, POLICY ON RECOGNITION OF HOSTAGES, AND FIRST CONTACT TRANSACTIONS WITH ALL SUSPECTS MUST BE REEVALUATED AND REEMPHASIZED.
