Abstract
THIS PAPER WAS A CONTRIBUTION TO THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF COMPARATIVE CRIMINOLOGY, HELD IN MONTREAL, CANADA IN 1974. THE PAPER DEVELOPS A TYPOLOGY OF PROTESTING GROUPS FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF IDEOLOGY AND STRATEGY OF SOCIAL CHANGE. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE CONCEPTS OF SOCIAL LEGITIMACY AND SOCIAL REACTION AS APPLIED TO PROTESTING GROUPS. THE CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN THE FIRST PART OF THE PAPER ARE APPLIED IN A SUMMARY OF THE HISTORY OF SOCIAL PROTEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIAL ROLES OF THE POLICE IN THAT HISTORY. --IN FRENCH
