RESULTS OF A SURVEY INDICATING SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN OPINION CONCERNING EMPLOYMENT OF WOMEN IN POLICE PATROL AND AS SUPERVISORS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR CITES THE CONTROVERSY OVER ENLARGING THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN POLICE WORK, ESPECIALLY IN PATROL AND SUPERVISORY POSITIONS. A NATIONWIDE SAMPLE OF POLICE EDUCATORS AND MALE AND FEMALE POLICE OFFICERS ATTENDING COLLEGE LEVEL PROGRAMS WERE SURVEYED BY MAIL. QUESTIONNAIRES INVESTIGATED OPINIONS ON WOMEN IN POLICE WORK, PATROL PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY OF MALE AND FEMALE OFFICERS, AND A SELF-REPORT INVENTORY FOR POLICEWOMEN COMPARING THEIR PRESENT TREATMENT WITH THEIR EXPECTATIONS. THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT POLICEWOMEN AND EDUCATORS DIFFER SIGNIFICANTLY FROM POLICEMEN REGARDING THE ROLE OF WOMEN. POLICEWOMEN AND EDUCATORS BELIEVE THE ROLE OF WOMEN COULD BE ENLARGED, WHILE POLICEMEN GENERALLY DO NOT. POLICEWOMEN EXPRESSED RESPONSES THAT INDICATED A HIGH AMOUNT OF DISSATISFACTION. EXTENSIVE TABLES OF THESE RESULTS AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE INCLUDED.
