THE NIGHT PROSECUTOR'S PROGRAM, DEVELOPED BY THE CITY ATTORNEY'S OFFICE OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, DIVERTS MANY OFFENSES RESULTING FROM INTERPERSONAL DISPUTES OUT OF THE COURT SYSTEM.
Abstract
THE NIGHT PROSECUTOR'S PROGRAM, SO NAMED BECAUSE HEARINGS ARE HELD IN THE EVENING, SEEKS TO HELP ANTAGONISTIC PARTIES RESOLVE THEIR DISPUTES IN FACE TO FACE CONFRONTATIONS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THE COMMISSION OF THE OVERT ACT WHICH CAUSED THE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT. THE GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE (1) TO SPEED THE DISPENSATION OF JUSTICE TO CITIZENS WHO BECOME INVOLVED IN MINOR CRIMINAL CONDUCT; (2) TO REDUCE THE CRIMINAL COURT BACKLOG; (3) TO EASE COMMUNITY AND INTERPERSONAL TENSIONS; (4) TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR THE WORKING POOR AT TIMES THAT DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THEIR JOBS; (5) TO REMOVE THE STIGMA OF AN ARREST RECORD ARISING FROM MINOR PERSONAL DISPUTES.
