DIFFERENT POLICE SHIFT PATTERNS ARE DESCRIBED THAT ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE MORALE AND JOB SATISFACTION FOR MILITARY POLICE.
Abstract
THE AUTHORS ADVOCATE REPLACING THE 9 AND 3 SHIFT (9 DAYS ON AND 3 DAYS OFF) WITH A 6 AND 2 SHIFT (SIX DAYS ON AND 2 DAYS OFF). THE ADVANTAGE IS THAT OFFICERS WORK 6 DAYS ON THE SAME SHIFT AND THEN HAVE WEEKENDS OFF LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE. OTHER CONCEPTS ARE THE 8 AND 16 (8 HOURS ON AND 16 HOURS OFF) AND THE 12 AND 24 (TWELVE HOURS ON AND 24 HOURS OFF). THE DRAWBACK OF THE FORMER IS THAT IS A 'FROZEN' SHIFT WITH UNEQUITABLE ASSIGNMENTS. THE LATTER SCHEME IS TOO FATIGUING.
