VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM OF PROVIDING FAIR AND EQUITABLE JUSTICE TO CANADA'S NATIVE (INDIAN AND ESKIMO) POPULATION ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE FIRST ARTICLE, AN INTERVIEW WITH NINE YOUNG NATIVE PRISONERS' REVEALS THAT A COMBINATION OF ALCOHOL ABUSE, LACK OF EDUCATION, AND SOCIOECONOMIC ADVERSITIES, IN THEIR ESTIMATION, CONTRIBUTED TO THEIR PRESENT PLIGHT IN PRISON. THE NEXT ARTICLE EXPOSES MANY OF THE INEQUITIES BETWEEN THE TREATMENT OF NATIVES AND CAUCASIANS IN CANADIAN PRISONS. THE NEED FOR SPECIALIZED NATIVE INMATE PROGRAMS AND THE TYPES OF PROGRAMS PRESENTLY AVAILABLE ARE DISCUSSED. OTHER ARTICLES DEAL WITH THE PROGRESS OF A NATIVE COMMISSION TO PROBE NATIVE CRIME CAUSES, A UNIFORM APPROACH TO NATIVE POLICING, THE RESPONSE OF THE PAROLE SERVICE TO NATIVE NEEDS, AND THE EFFECT OF THE PRISON SYSTEM IN PERPETUATING UNEMPLOYMENT. A BRIEF BIBLIOGRAPHY IS INCLUDED. --IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH...PLO
