THIS IS THE SIXTH QUARTERLY SURVEY OF JUDICIAL SALARIES IN STATE COURT SYSTEMS PUBLISHED BY THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR STATE COURTS.
Abstract
ALL CHANGES IN THIS EDITION HAVE BEEN TYPED IN ITALICS TO MAKE THE CHANGES MORE NOTICEABLE. THE 'RANK ORDER OF JUDICIAL SALARIES, POPULATION, AND PER CAPITA INCOME IN THE FIFTY STATES' CONTAINED IN THIS VOLUME UTILIZES THE STATE PAID SALARY (WITHOUT THE SUPPLEMENT ADDED) FOR RANKING PURPOSES. THE 'JUDICIAL SALARIES IN APPELLATE AND TRIAL COURTS' TABLE LISTS THE DATE OF LAST SALARY CHANGE FOR EACH STATE COURT SYSTEM. THIS TABLE, LIKE THE 'RANK ORDER OF JUDICIAL SALARIES', UTILIZES SALARIES PAID TO ASSOCIATE JUSTICES FOR THE HIGHEST COURT AND INTERMEDIATE APPELLATE COURTS. THE GENERAL TRIAL COURT SALARIES REFER TO THE STATE-PAID SALARY MINUS SUPPLEMENTS FOR RANKING PURPOSES, SUPPLEMENTS APPEAR IN PARENTHESES IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE FIGURES FOR THE STATE PAID SALARY. THE SECTION DEALING WITH JUDICIAL SALARIES IN COURTS OF LIMITED AND SPECIAL JURISDICATION IS DIVIDED INTO SEVEN CATEGORIES ON A JURISDICTIONAL BASIS, WHICH INCLUDE: FAMILY COURTS, PROBATE AND SURROGATE COURTS, JUSTICE COURTS AND JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, COUNTY COURTS, CIRCUIT OR DISTRICT COURTS, MUNICIPAL AND POLICE COURTS, AND COMMON PLEA COURTS. APPENDIX I LISTS ALL PENDING LEGISLATION WHICH COULD AFFECT JUDICIAL SALARIES ON A STATE-BY-STATE BASIS. APPENDIX II INDICATES THOSE STATES WHICH PROVIDE FOR 'FLOATING' JUDICIAL SALARIES ON THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX OR OTHER COST OF LIVING ADJUSTER. (SNI ABSTRACT)
