AUDIO-VISUAL TRAINING MATERIAL PROVIDING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF TECHNIQUES THAT CAN BE USED WHEN DEALING WITH MENTALLY DISORDERED INDIVIDUALS.
Abstract
WHEN A MENTALLY ILL PERSON LOSES CONTROL OF HIMSELF EITHER AT HOME OR IN SOME PUBLIC PLACE, A POLICE OFFICER IS USUALLY THE FIRST RESPONSIBLE PERSON TO REACH THE SCENE. DEALING WITH DISORDERED PERSONS REQUIRES TRAINING AND AT LEAST A RUDIMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE NATURE OF MENTAL DISEASE AND THE MORE COMMON SYMPTOMS. MENTAL DISORDERS IS AN AUDIO-VISUAL TRAINING AID THAT PROVIDES OFFICERS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE TECHNIQUES THAT CAN BE USED WHEN DEALING WITH DISORDERED PERSONS. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON HANDLING 'ON THE STREET' SITUATIONS RATHER THAN THE CLINICAL ASPECTS OF MENTAL ILLNESS. THE CAUSES AS WELL AS THE SYMPTOMS OF COMMON DISORDERS ARE DISCUSSED AND THE NEED FOR A CALM PROFESSIONAL APPROACH IS STRESSED. A BRIEF DISCUSSION ON THE PRECAUTIONS NEEDED WHEN HANDLING PERSONS WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR ORDINARY OFFENSES BUT WHO SHOW SIGNS OF MENTAL DERANGEMENT IS ALSO INCLUDED. THIS PACKAGE IS A COMPLETE AUDIO-VISUAL TRAINING KIT WHICH INCLUDES EIGHTY 35MM. SLIDES, A PRE-RECORDED NARRATION CASSETTE, A FULLY ILLUSTRATED INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE, 25 STUDENT HANDOUT STUDY NOTES, AND 25 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS. THE INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE CONTAINS LISTINGS OF MATERIALS PROVIDED, EQUIPMENT NEEDED, PROJECTOR AND RECORDER ACCESSORIES, SUGGESTED WAYS TO USE THE PROGRAM, AND HINTS ON PREPARATION AND PRESENTAION.
