STUDY OF APPEALS ON THE BASIS OF MEDICAL, AND IN PRACTICE MAINLY PSYCHIATRIC REPORTS IN COURTS IN INNER LONDON AND IN THE WESSEX REGIONAL HOSPITAL BOARD AREA, ENGLAND.
Abstract
IN PART I, FROM DATA DRAWN FROM A STUDY OF THE WORK OF 18 INNER LONDON COURTS DURING 1969, THE STUDY CONSIDERS TWO ASPECTS OF THE MEDICAL REMAND: FIRSTLY, ITS FREQUENCY IN RELATION TO THE TOTAL TURNOVER OF THE COURTS AND SECONDLY, THE NUMBER AND PROPORTION OF MEDICAL DISPOSALS MADE BY THE COURTS AS AN OUTCOME OF THE MEDICAL REMAND. THE TYPE OF MEDICAL REMAND--WHETHER IN CUSTODY OR ON BAIL --IS ALSO DISCUSSED. IN PART II THE STUDY CONSIDERS THESE SAME ISSUES FOR AN AREA OUTSIDE LONDON AND THE RESULTS ARE THEN CONTRASTED WITH THE SITUATION IN INNER LONDON. THE EVIDENCE SUGGESTS THAT THERE ARE CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE AREAS IN THE WAY THAT MAGISTRATES SELECT AND DEAL WITH THEIR MEDICAL REMAND POPULATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
