THIS SIMULATION GIVES STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO VIEW THE CRIMINAL/LEGAL PROCESS FROM THREE BASIC PERSPECTIVES; THE VIEWPOINT OF THE PUBLIC; THE VIEWPOINT OF A SUSPECT AND THE VIEWPOINT OF A PUBLIC OFFICIAL OR A LAWYER.
Abstract
IT IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE PARTICIPANTS WITH FRUSTRATIONS, DELAYS, CONFUSION, AND UNCERTAINTY - JUST LIKE REAL LIFE. THE MANUAL PRESENTS IN-DEPTH DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH ROLE ASSIGNED IN THE GAME: CONTROL (THE CRIME INITIATOR AND THE TAX COLLECTOR), THE PUBLIC (VICTIM, WITNESS, AND TAXPAYER-VALIDATOR), SUSPECT, POLICE, PUBLIC ATTORNEY, PRIVATE ATTORNEY, PROSECUTOR, JUDGE, AND WARDEN. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE 50 CRIMINAL INCIDENTS WITH WHICH MEMBERS OF THE SIMULATION WILL BE CONFRONTED AND A COPY OF THE SIMULATION'S LEGAL CODE. SAMPLES OF FORMS WHICH MUST BE FILLED OUT AT SOME POINT IN THE CASE PROCESSING ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THERE IS A TIME LIMIT OF 20 MINUTES IN WHICH EACH CRIME MUST BE PROCESSED THROUGH THE SIMULATION. IF A CASE EXPIRES BEFORE GOING THROUGH THE COURT, THE CHARGES AGAINST THE SUSPECT ARE AUTOMATICALLY DROPPED AND THE CASE - FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE PUBLIC - IS LOST. IF A CASE EXPIRES BEFORE IT HAS COMPLETED THE JUDICIAL PROCESS, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED A LOST CASE FOR THE PROSECUTOR, A WON CASE FOR THE DEFENSE ATTORNEY WHO HANDLED THE CASE, AND AN EXPIRED CASE FOR THE JUDGE.
