Abstract
THE WORK EXAMINES AMONG OTHER MATTERS, JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS, REMUNERATION, PROMOTION AND RETIREMENT, POLITICS AND THE BENCH, THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL MECHANISMS OF REMOVAL AND THE VARIOUS FORMS OF CHECKING JUDGES, JUDICIAL ETHICS, GROUNDS FOR REMOVAL AND DISCIPLINE, AND PROPOSALS FOR REFORM IN THE MACHINERY OF APPOINTMENT AND REMOVAL. THE CENTRAL PURPOSE IS TO STUDY THE JUDGES AT THE HIGH COURT LEVEL AND ABOVE, BUT REFERENCES HAVE BEEN MADE TO ALL LEVELS OF THE JUDICIAL HIERARCHY. SPECIAL EMPHASIS WAS LAID ON THE DOCUMENTATION OF PRACTICES WHICH ARE NOT GOVERNED BY STATUTES, BUT BY UNWRITTEN CONVENTIONS AND CUSTOM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...TWH
