Abstract
The public may interpret the injunction to drink safely in either of two ways. Those who drink in excess of the recommended levels may reduce their consumption to these levels, while those who drink at lower levels than those advised as safe may increase their consumption to these levels. This consequence might be considered paradoxical because of the widespread belief that the per capita consumption of alcohol increases directly with the problems associated with alcohol. Hypothetical consequences of any move to encourage safe drinking are illustrated by reference to Australian data. 3 tables. 16 references. (Author abstract modified)
