Abstract
THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH OF CITIES FROM EARLY CIVILIZATIONS TO THE PRESENT IS TRACED. CURRENT GROWTH RATES IN GENERAL POPULATION AND IN CITY POPULATION ARE PRESENTED. DEFINITIONS OF SLUMS AND SUBURBS, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF THE RELATIVE GROWTH OF EACH ARE PROVIDED. URBAN RENEWAL EFFORTS AND PLANNING OF CITY GROWTH ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. PROBLEMS IN RUSHHOUR TRANSPORTATION, AND AIR AND LAND TRANSPORTATION CONGESTION IN GENERAL ARE EXAMINED, AND SOME MASS TRANSPORT AND TRAFFIC CONTROL SOLUTIONS ARE PRESENTED. INTERNATIONAL PROBLEMS IN URBAN POLLUTION AND SOME CONTROLS OR SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE ARE ANALYZED. SOCIAL AND HUMAN PROBLEMS RESULTING FROM THE PRESSURES OF CITY LIFE ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. ALIENATION, POVERTY, INEQUALITY, LACK OF OPPORTUNITY, VIOLENCE, AND GHETTO REVOLTS ARE AMONG THE ISSUES EXAMINED.
