These 14 papers were presented at a 1987 conference that brought academics and practitioners together to examine the nature of terrorist activity with political aims and the governmental responses to it in a variety of nations.
Abstract
The discussions focused on terrorist acts designed to change governmental policies or alliances rather than to overthrow existing authority. Individual papers provide an overview of international terrorism, the use of antiterrorism legislation in the United States, and the relationship between political terrorism and common criminality. Additional papers examine the French response to terrorism, terrorism in the Middle East, terrorist activities in Sri Lanka, and the escalation of terrorism in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Further papers explore strategies of defense against biological warfare, the use of artificial intelligence in efforts to address terrorism, the role of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East, Interpol's perspective on international terrorism and drug trafficking, and the role of drugs and drug trafficking in terrorism.
