WHAT PRISON INMATES MOST NEED IS TO HAVE SOME RESPONSIBILITY RATHER THAN TO HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF ATTENTION PAID TO GUARANTEEING THEM CERTAIN RIGHTS.
Abstract
GRANTING RIGHTS TO INMATES, WITH A GREAT FEELING OF SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS, IN ORDER TO ALLEVIATE THEIR SITUATION, MAY ACTUALLY BE THE RESULT OF A FAILURE TO COMPREHEND WHAT THAT SITUATION IS. SUCH WELL-MEANT KINDNESSES MAY ACTUALLY AMOUNT MERELY TO GIVING THE INMATE A SMELL OF THE FREEDOM OF WHICH HE IS DEPRIVED, THUS ADDING TO HIS FRUSTRATION. BEING ABLE TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY, ON THE OTHER HAND, IS A FUNDAMENTAL SOCIAL ACCOMPLISHMENT, AND IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO GRANT RIGHTS AND GUARANTEE THEM SO THAT THE INMATES CAN RETAIN THE RIGHT TO HAVE RESPONSIBILITY. THEN THE RIGHTS WILL BE INTEGRATED IN A MEANINGFUL WAY INTO THE MORE COMPREHENSIVE OBJECTIVES OF INMATE TREATMENT. --IN DUTCH
