THIS STUDY EXAMINES THE NATURE OF HOMICIDE AMONG CANADIAN INDIANS ON THE BASES OF CRIME DATA, ATTITUDES, DEMOGRAPHY AND PERSONALITY.
Abstract
WHEN COMPARED TO A CONTROL GROUP OF WHITE CANADIAN HOMICIDERS, IT WAS FOUND THAT CANADIAN INDIAN HOMICIDERS ARE OVERREPRESENTED IN THE INMATE POPULATION. MORE INDIANS ARE CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER, WHILE MORE WHITES ARE CHARGED WITH HOMICIDE. INDIANS ARE DIFFERENTIATED FROM WHITE HOMICIDERS ON SEVERAL FACTORS: PURPOSEFULNESS OF THE CRIME, RELATIONSHIP WITH VICTIM, ALCOHOL INVOLVEMENT, EDUCATION, AND ATTITUDES TOWARD IMPRISONMENT.
