The Hate Crimes Statistics Act was passed on May 18, 1988 by the House of Representatives and is expected to be the subject of a Senate vote during the summer.
Abstract
The legislation requires the United States Department of Justice to gather data on crimes motivated by prejudice based on race, religion, homosexuality or heterosexuality, or ethnicity. Representatives of the Center for Democratic Renewal testified in favor of the bill. The Center for Democratic Renewal, the American Bar Association, and more than 30 other organizations also supported documentation of attacks on homosexuals. The House overwhelmingly rejected an effort to exclude coverage of these crimes. A Senate subcommittee is currently considering two versions of this legislation.
