Abstract
Major findings from this report include: between 2008 and 2009, there was a 36-percent decrease in reported hate crimes in the State; in 2009, there were 63 reported incidents of hate crimes in Wisconsin; the reported hate crimes were committed by 79 offenders against 72 victims and involved 71 offenses; the most frequent offenses committed during the reported hate crimes were vandalism and simple assault; the most common site for the occurrence of hate crimes was in a street, alley, or parking lot (19 percent); in 59 percent of the reported cases, bias against race was the motivating factor; and hate crimes occurred in 26 of the State's 398 UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) reporting agencies. The report from the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance summarizes the data on hate crimes reported to law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin during 2009. The data is collected as part of Wisconsin's UCR program and contains information on criminal offenses motivated by an offender's bias against a race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity/national origin, or disability.
