This report from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services summarizes statistical data on hate crimes reported in New York State in 2009.
Abstract
Major findings from this report include: 1) there was a 14-percent increase in reported hate crimes in New York State between 2008 and 2009; 2) the basis for reported hate crimes were anti-Jewish bias (37 percent), followed by anti-Black bias (21 percent), anti-male homosexual bias (12 percent), and anti-Hispanic bias (6 percent); 3) the majority of hate crime incidents involved destruction, damage, or vandalism (44 percent) or intimidation (26 percent); 4) overall, New York State reported 394 incidents and 126 arrests, with 275 hate crime incidents and 53 hate crime arrests occurring in New York City; and 5) almost 30 percent of those convicted from a hate crime arrest were sentenced to either jail or prison, while 18 percent were sentenced to probation. Data summarized included hate crimes reported by police, the number of hate crime arrests, offenses associated with arrests, the county of arrest, and disposition information. The report is divided into three sections: section 1 contains descriptions of hate crime incidents reported by law enforcement in 2009; section 2 contains data on arrests and dispositions of hate crime cases for arrests made in 2009; and section 3 contains appendixes comparing 2008 hate crime incident data with that obtained for 2009.
