DESCRIBES CHARACTERISTICS OF FEMALE INCARCERANTS AT THE GEORGIA REHABILITATION CENTER FOR WOMEN, HARDWICK, GEORGIA, AND COMPARES THE FINDINGS WITH OTHER INMATE POPULATIONS.
Abstract
THIS STUDY, CONDUCTED IN JUNE 1973, FOUND THAT EXCEPT FOR RACIAL COMPOSITION (PREDOMINANTLY BLACK), FEMALES ARE GENERALLY MARRIED, HAVE CHILDREN, MINOR PREVIOUS ADULT AND/OR JUVENILE RECORDS, MINOR TO NO DRUG EXPERIENCE AND ARE PREDOMINANTLY UNDER 30 YEARS OF AGE. AS COMPARED TO HER MALE COUNTERPART SHE IS YOUNGER, MARRIED, A MOTHER, HAS FEWER PRIOR CONVICTIONS AND WILL HAVE CHILD-REARING RESPONSIBILITIES UPON RELEASE. DURING THE PAST DECADE, FEMALE ARREST RATES, GRAVITY OF OFFENSE, CONVICTIONS AND INCARCERATIONS HAVE EXHIBITED A GREATER PERCENTAGE INCREASE THAN THOSE OF MALE OFFENDERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
