A DESCRIPTION OF A MACHINE (ALICE) WHICH, ALTHOUGH NOT A DEDICATED FINGERPRINT READER, HAS FINGERPRINT PROCESSING CAPABILITIES IN THAT IT CAN SCAN FINGERPRINTS AND TRANSLATE THEM INTO LINE GRAPHS SUBJECT TO RECALL.
Abstract
APPLIED RESEARCH IN THE AREA OF FINGERPRINT AUTOMATION HAS BEEN IMPEDED IN THIS COUNTRY BY A LACK OF MACHINES WITH THE CAPABILITY OF PROCESSING A SUFFICIENTLY LARGE FINGERPRINT DATA BASE AND THE FLEXIBILITY TO STUDY ALL ASPECTS OF THE FINGERPRINT PROBLEM. ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY (ANL) NOW HAS A MACHINE WHICH IS IDEALLY SUITED FOR FINGERPRINT RESEARCH. THIS MACHINE, ALTHOUGH GENERAL PURPOSE IN NATURE, WAS INFLUENCED IN ITS DESIGN BY EARLY FINGERPRINT RESEARCH AND TEN YEARS OF IMAGE PROCESSING EXPERIENCE. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE EARLY RESEARCH. IT DESCRIBES THE NEW IMAGE PROCESSING SYSTEM, POINTING OUT ITS UNIQUE CAPABILITIES. THE GOALS OF THE PRESENT FINGERPRINT RESEARCH ARE DESCRIBED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
