Based upon on-site field observations and interviews, this study explores village-level police and vigilante organizations in the Phillipines.
Abstract
A typology of social control systems is presented. The varying degrees of group 'formality,' 'official authority,' and 'independence' of several control systems are discussed. Attention is given to the way informal control systems link with more official government police networks, and with the larger village community. The research helps to clarify the 'self-help' theory and several propositions regarding the behavior of law in a battle-ridden society. (Author abstract)
