Abstract
Among forcewide programs have been efforts to reduce the incidence of false alarms from remote signaling stations, an auto theft reduction campaign and program evaluation, a program to reduce victimization of the elderly by bogus officials, cash-carrying roadshows, business and hospital watch programs, establishment of the Coalition Against Crime, crime prevention panels, a crime line offering crime prevention messages, three architectural design projects, development of a code of practice for safe firearm storage, and a police training program emphasizing off-duty crime prevention. A number of multiagency projects have included significant media involvement and the preparation and distribution of brochures. In addition, 2,441 neighborhood watch schemes have been established, covering 180,000 homes. School programs have included a schools liaison workshop and school security seminars. Other programs include a shop-theft reduction program, five police training programs on crime prevention, and an urban crime prevention program. Forcewide campaigns also are being planned in the area of violent crime prevention (including sexual offenses and assaults) and a program for the visually handicapped. Local initiatives have focused on auto and bicycle theft, cash carrying, vandalism, public disorder, juvenile alcohol use, and holiday crime.
