Abstract
THE MIDDLE INCOME AMERICAN IS CITED AS THE INDIVIDUAL MOST FREQUENTLY VICTIMIZED BY AMATEUR CRIMINALS (USUALLY BETWEEN 14 AND 24 YEARS OLD). THE AUTHOR FIRST ADVISES HOME SECURITY THROUGH THE USE OF SECURE LOCKS. DESCRIPTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS ARE GIVEN OF DIFFERENT LOW-COST LOCKS FOR DOORS AND WINDOWS. A DISCUSSION OF HOME ALARM SYSTEMS IS PRESENTED. HOWEVER, DOGS ARE RECOMMENDED AS AN EFFECTIVE YET ECONOMICAL ALARM. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR LIGHTING SYSTEMS AND OTHER AIDS TO MAKE IT APPEAR THAT SOMEONE IS ALWAYS AT HOME, AND COMMENTS ARE MADE ON DISPLAY AND DISCUSSION OF VALUABLE POSSESSIONS. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO STEPS FOR PROVIDING CAR SECURITY FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION SELF-DEFENSE AIDS, SUCH AS GUNS, TEAR-GAS GUNS, WHISTLES, OR SELF DEFENSE ARTS (KARATE, KUNG FU). OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE HOME INSURANCE, OPERATION IDENTIFICATION (PLACING IDENTIFYING NUMBERS ON PERSONAL POSSESSIONS), AND CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN ANTI-CRIME PROGRAMS.
