DISCUSSES CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR AND EXPLANATIONS FOR IT, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, CONFINEMENT AND CORRECTION, AND THE OFFENDER IN THE COMMUNITY.
Abstract
THE DESCRIPTION OF THE REAL WORLDS OF CRIME AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE RELEVANCE OF THEORIES TO PRACTICE ARE CITED AS REASONS FOR THE WRITING OF 'CRIME, CORRECTION, AND SOCIETY'. AN INTRODUCTION COVERS DEFINITIONS OF CRIME AND CRIMINOLOGY, AND TRENDS AND IMPACT OF CRIME. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION IS DEVOTED TO LAWMAKING AS AN ATTEMPT TO USE FORMAL CONTROLS TO SUPPLEMENT INFORMAL SOCIAL CONTROLS. OTHER TOPICS INCLUDE THE SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS THAT BIND INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS INTO A NORMATIVE WORKING ORDER AND CONSIDERATION OF CRIME AS A FUNCTIONAL PART OF THE BROAD SOCIAL SYSTEM. FOUNDATIONS OF CRIMINOLOGICAL THEORIES, THEORIES ON THE INDIVIDUAL OFFENDER, THE SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF CRIME AND CRIMINALS, AND THEORIES AND APPLIED CRIMINOLOGY ARE DESCRIBED. A DISCUSSION OF CONFINEMENT AND CORRECTION EXAMINES THE HISTORICAL ROOTS OF CORRECTIONAL PRACTICE, THE PRISON AS A FORMAL ORGANIZATION, CONFINEMENT AND THE INMATE SOCIAL SYSTEM, AND TREATMENT IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS. THE FINAL SECTION OF THE BOOK EXAMINES CRIME PREVENTION, CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS AND PROSPECTS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM. (SNI ABSTRACT)
