BY REVIEWING THE COMPLICATED METHODS, TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES, EXPENSE, AND LEGAL SANCTIONS RELATING TO ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE, THE AUTHOR SEEKS TO ALLAY THE AVERAGE CITIZEN'S FEAR OF ELECTRONIC EAVESDROPPING.
Abstract
TYPES OF CITIZENS WHO MAY FEEL THEY ARE THE OBJECTS OF ELECTRONIC SURVEILLANCE MAY INCLUDE: THE OVER-IMAGINATIVE PERSON; THOSE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING A DIVORCE; AND MENTALLY DISTURBED PERSONS. POSSIBLE TYPES OF ELECTRONIC SNOOPING ARE OUTLINED. THESE INCLUDE TELEPHONE WIRE TAPS, HIDDEN MICROPHONES, AND MINIATURE RADIO TRANSMITTERS. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE STEPS THAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN TO INSTALL THESE DEVICES, AND STRESSES THE DIFFICULTIES AND EXPENSE OF EACH STEP. THE LEGAL RISKS OF WIRETAPPING, SUCH AS CHARGES OF BREAKING AND ENTERING OR VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAWS ON ILLEGAL ELECTRONIC EAVESDROPPING ARE ALSO DISCUSSED.
