A WEST GERMAN SPECIALIST DISCUSSES THE POTENTIAL USE OF TWO PSYCHOTHERAPEUTIC TECHNIQUES, WHICH HAVE THE ADVANTAGES OF SHORT TRAINING TIME FOR STAFF, SHORT TREATMENT TIME FOR PATIENTS, AND USE IN GROUP SITUATIONS.
Abstract
AUTOGENOUS TRAINING IS A METHOD OF STEP-BY-STEP, SELF-INDUCED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL RELAXATION, DESIGNED TO PREVENT VIOLENT OR ANXIOUS BEHAVIOR. CATATHYMIC SYMBOL DRAMA IS A METHOD IN WHICH THE THERAPIST INDUCES A STATE OF DREAM-LIKE RELAXATION IN WHICH SURPRESSED EMOTIONS ARE SPONTANEOUSLY EXPRESSED AND PURGED. THESE METHODS ARE INTENDED AS SUBSUDIARY TECHNIQUES IN SUPPORT OF BROADER TREATMENT PROGRAMS. THE CONVENIENCE OF THEIR APPLICATION IS APPROPRIATE IN LIGHT OF MODERN TRENDS TOWARD SHORT-TERM INCARCERATION. --IN GEMMAN
