THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO ANALYZE THE PROBLEM OF THE PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS OFFENDER ON SKID ROW AND THE MANNER IN WHICH THIS PROBLEM IS BEING HANDLED.
Abstract
THE SUBCULTURE OF SKID ROW - ITS INHABITANTS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO ALCOHOLISM - IS DESCRIBED. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SKID ROW DRINKING PATTERNS ARE COMPARED. THE CONFLICTS WHICH PROBLEM DRINKERS ENCOUNTER WHEN THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH THE POLICE AND THE COURTS ARE ALSO PRESENTED. IN ADDITION, VARIOUS EXPERIMENTAL REHABILITATIVE PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE AUTHORS PROPOSE A POLICE-SPONSORED COMMUNITY PROGRAM FOR THE TREATMENT OF ALCOHOLISM. THIS DIAGNOSTIC, TREATMENT AND AFTER-CARE PROGRAM WOULD SET UP A CENTER WHICH WOULD OFFER MEDICAL, PSYCHIATRIC, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL TREATMENT AND SUPPORT. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
