AN EVALUATION OF PROBATION IN ALBERTA (CANADA) IN WHICH RECIDIVISM RATES WERE USED AS A GUAGE OF PROBATION EFFECTIVENESS.
Abstract
RECIDIVISM RATES WERE DETERMINED ON A PROVINCE-WIDE SAMPLE OF ALL PEOPLE CONVICTED OF CRIMINAL OFFENCES IN ALBERTA BETWEEN JANUARY 1ST, 1967, AND DECEMBER 31ST, 1971, WHOSE DISPOSITION INCLUDED PROBATION. RECIDIVISM RATES WERE COMPUTED NOT ONLY FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME ON PROBATION, BUT ALSO FOR THE PERIOD OF TIME AFTER PROBATION TERMINATED, UNTIL DECEMBER 31ST, 1972. A FURTHER PURPOSE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DEVELOP A PREDICTION TECHNIQUE BASED ON SUCH PROBATIONERS' CHARACTERISTICS AS AGE, SEX, AREA OF RESIDENCE, EDUCATION, AND PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS, TO INDICATE WHICH PEOPLE WOULD BE MOST MOST LIKELY TO RE-OFFEND.
