Abstract
Chapters on the epidemiology of HIV infection include discussions of definitions and codes, the numbers and demographic characteristics of U.S. cases, the international epidemiology of AIDS, the growth of the U.S. epidemic, infection in prisoners and prostitutes, and projections for the future. In discussing the transmission of HIV infection, chapters focus on its transmission in body fluids, its homosexual and heterosexual transmission, and its transmission via intravenous drug users. HIV transmission through prostitutes and prisoners is also addressed. Chapters on testing for the HIV antibody consider methodology and how to tell persons they have the HIV. A discussion of the HIV and pathogenesis of AIDS considers the characteristics of HIV and related viruses and the immunology of AIDS. A series of chapters related to AIDS treatment covers the natural history, clinical spectrum, and general management of HIV infection; clinical manifestations of HIV infection; infections and malignancies associated with AIDS; pediatric AIDS; systems of care for AIDS patients; and health policy issues. Nine chapters cover public education and prevention strategies, and seven chapters discuss ethical issues related to AIDS. For individual chapters, see NCJ 124754-62. Chapter references.
