This report presents an overview of the AIDS epidemic, possible treatments and means of prevention, the international strategy to combat the disease, and various humanitarian issues.
Abstract
The HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) virus and its target cells are discussed. Various tests to detect the presence of the disease are presented. Possible treatments and vaccines are outlined, as well as current research. The epidemiology of AIDS is reported, with heterosexual transmission being a major contributing factor to the spread of the disease. It is noted that black and Hispanic Americans in the United States are particularly susceptible to AIDS. Prevention of AIDS is explored, with emphasis placed on education and public service campaigns. The report also focuses on the economic toll of the disease and its significance in terms of lost productivity in the United States and reduced tourism in many African countries. International strategies to combat the disease are explored, such as coordinating global research. Humanitarian issues; such as AIDS in prisons, AIDS and homosexuals, and mandatory testing; are discussed. Appendix, references.
