JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AWARDS OVER $2.7 MILLION
TO HELP STATES AND COMMUNITIES MANAGE SEX OFFENDERS
WASHINGTON, DC ? Eleven states received a total of approximately $2.75
million to implement comprehensive strategies to manage sex offenders under
community supervision, the Justice Department announced today.? These awards mark the fourth year of the
Justice Department?s Comprehensive Approaches to Sex Offender Management Grant
program, which is administered by the Office of Justice Programs? (OJP) Bureau
of Justice Assistance (BJA).
?We all have a responsibility to ensure that sex offenders, once
released from prison, are reintegrated successfully into society with no threat
to their communities,? said OJP Assistant Attorney General Deborah J.
Daniels.? ?These grants will help
communities monitor and treat sex offenders through a comprehensive, systemic
approach.?
To receive funds under the Comprehensive Approaches to Sex Offender
Management Grant program, communities must develop multi-disciplinary teams,
which include law enforcement, probation and parole officers, other criminal
justice personnel, courts, treatment providers and victim advocates.? Using these grant funds, the teams will
identify strengths and weaknesses in sex offender management systems and assess
the staff and equipment necessary to identify, track and treat sex offenders.
Training and technical assistance will be provided to grantees and
other interested jurisdictions through a grant to the Center for Sex Offender
Management in Silver Spring, Maryland.?
Attached is a list of the Fiscal Year 2002 Comprehensive Approaches to
Sex Offender Management grants.?? More
