Justice
Department Announces Grants Totaling
?More
Than $10 Million to Help Communities Prevent Crime
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Justice Department
today announced Community Prosecution grants to 75 communities totaling more
than $10 million.? The Bureau of Justice
Assistance (BJA), a component of the Justice Department?s Office of Justice
Programs (OJP), awards these grants to foster collaborative efforts between
local prosecutors? offices, private and public agencies, and the community to
identify and address local public safety concerns and priorities.
?Community involvement is critical in
promoting safe neighborhoods,? said Assistant Attorney General Deborah J.
Daniels.? ?These grants provide the
necessary resources to strengthen partnerships between the prosecutor?s office,
law enforcement agencies and neighborhood organizations.?
Community prosecution, like community
policing, is an integral part of community justice, which fosters citizen
participation in reducing crime and improving the quality of life in their
neighborhoods.? Together, community
prosecutors, neighborhood residents and organizations develop strategies for
creating safer places to live and work.
These grants will? help
communities plan, implement or enhance prosecution and crime prevention
strategies.? The
communities were selected based on their proposed or existing
strategies.?
Grant awards are provided in one of the three
categories. Planning grants, available for
up to $75,000, support jurisdictions? efforts to develop a planning
process for a community prosecution program.
Implementation grants, available for up to $200,000, support the
implementation or expansion of an existing community prosecution program.? Enhancement grants, available for up to
$150,000, support fully operational community prosecution programs.
Under the Fiscal Year 2001 Community
Prosecution Program Initiative, BJA recommended nine jurisdictions that have
developed successful community prosecution programs to serve as leadership
sites or learning laboratories for others seeking to replicate similar
strategies.? The sites are: Denver, CO;
Washington, DC: Marion County (Indianapolis), IN; Howard County, MD; Kalamazoo
County, MI; Hennepin County (Minneapolis), MN; Kings County (Brooklyn), NY ;
Multnomah County (Portland), OR; Travis County (Austin), TX.??? Leadership sites will host regional
community prosecution workshops in 2002.
?We want to bring communities and the
criminal justice system closer together by
forming? effective communication
networks that will result in strategies that work in their own neighborhoods,?
said BJA Director Richard Nedelkoff.
A list of communities selected to receive
Community Prosecution grants and their points of contact is attached.? For additional information about? BJA consult its Website at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bja.?? Information about OJP and its programs can
