JUSTICE DEPARTMENT FUNDS PROVIDE AID TO INDIAN WOMEN VICTIMS

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? A total of $6.35 million in Fiscal Year 2000 Justice Department funding has been awarded to 82 Indian tribal governments in 23 states to help respond to Indian women who are victims of domestic and sexual abuse. The STOP Violence Against Indian Women funds will also assist law enforcement officers and prosecutors who investigate and prosecute cases involving violence against Indian women.

?The Violence Against Women Act has always included a set aside for Indian women from the STOP formula program. Since 1995, we have provided over $36 million to tribal governments to support the work of police, prosecutors and victim services,? said Bonnie Campbell, Director of the Violence Against Women Office, which administers the funds. ?With the increase in funding to tribal communities authorized by the Violence Against Women Act of 2000, we can build on our efforts to help this underserved population.?

The Act, which was recently signed by the President as part of the ?Victims of Trafficking and Violence Prevention Act of 2000,? increases the percentage of the STOP Program appropriation that is set aside for the STOP Violence Against Indian Women Program from four to five percent. In Fiscal Year 2000, the four percent set aside was $8.27 million.

?Our program is helping tribal and non-tribal police and prosecutors and victim advocates work together within the tribal system to hold offenders accountable and keep victims safe,? added Campbell.

The Fiscal Year 2000 grants are for continuation of projects begun with previous fiscal year funds. The remainder of the program funds will be used for technical assistance. VAWO currently funds 130 federally recognized tribes, including consortia, which represent a total of 265 tribes in 26 states.<

Attached is a list of the specific grant awards.
