Attorney General Reno to Address Conference

About Enforcement of Protection Orders

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- On Wednesday, Attorney General Reno will deliver the keynote luncheon address at a conference sponsored by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the Battered Women's Justice Project, the Conference of Chief Justices, the Conference of State Court Administrators, and the National Center for State Courts and funded by the Department of Justice and the State Justice Institute. The Attorney General will discuss the challenges that the criminal justice community faces in implementing and enforcing the Violence Against Women Act's "full faith and credit" provision, which directs states and tribal courts to enforce valid civil and criminal protection orders issued by other jurisdictions. This working conference is intended to help participants develop plans for implementing the law's requirements.

Approximately 450 people will participate as part of state, tribal, and territorial teams. The teams will be comprised of law enforcement officers, judges, prosecutors, court administrators, victim advocates and Violence Against Women Act administrators. Plenary sessions and workshops will be held. Media are invited to attend all plenary sessions.
