Reentry Stakeholders Meet with Attorney General

Approximately 100 stakeholders from criminal justice associations, advocacy groups, and nonprofit organizations, members of the Reentry Council staff group, and DOJ officials including COPS Director Ron Davis, BJA Director Denise O'Donnell, OJJDP Administrator Robert Listenbee and OJP's Principal Deputy AAG Mary Lou Leary attended.

Hosts Mason and Samuels and others heard Attorney General Eric Holder speak of reentry as part of the Justice Department's "Smart on Crime" initiative, noting that if we simply warehouse criminals, we shouldn't be surprised at high rates of recidivism. He added that effective reentry can enhance public safety, save money, and reclaim lives. "We are on the cusp of something really significant," he said. "2014 will be a truly groundbreaking year in criminal justice reform, and reentry will be central."
