JUSTICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES $45.5 MILLION

TO SUPPORT DRUG-FREE COMMUNITIES IN FY 2002

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Justice Department? is awarding $45.5 million in grants to fund new and continuation awards for drug-free coalitions across the nation. The 70 new matching grant awards totaling $6.8 million are administered by the Office of Justice Programs? (OJP) Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) through the Drug-Free Communities Support Program.? The additional $38.7 million supports the continuation of grant awards to 462 community coalition projects operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.? The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) oversees the comprehensive program involving youth, parents, business and media representatives, school officials, law enforcement, civic, volunteer, and fraternal groups, healthcare professionals and religious organizations.??

?The majority of persons who come into contact with the criminal justice system, regardless of the offense, are substance abusers,? said Deborah J. Daniels, Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs.?? ?Over the past five years, the Office of Justice Programs and ONDCP have worked closely with local communities to break the cycle of substance abuse and crime by implementing multiple prevention approaches.? We look forward to continued commitment in this important arena. ?

The new sites were selected through a competitive review process from a pool of 448 applicants.? Over 50 percent of the awards are being made to rural communities and nearly half are being awarded to economically disadvantaged communities. Awards range from $61,989 to $100,000 for use over the next year, and grantees may apply for continuation awards.? ?The new coalition sites will be a welcome addition to our national prevention effort, said J. Robert Flores, Administrator of OJJDP.? ?They represent an organized and essential mechanism for key segments of every community to actively reduce substance abuse where they live and work.?

Award amounts and contact information for the new grantees is attached.? Individual project summaries are available for each grant award on OJJDP?s Web site at www.ojjdp.ncjrs.org. For more information on the Office of Justice Programs, see the OJP Web site at? www.ojp.usdoj.gov.? Media should contact OJP?s Office of Congressional and Public Affairs at 202-307-0703.
